Hosting, URLs, servers, IP addresses, domains… what does it all mean? Some people know what these words mean, and others think they know but would not be the first to offer an explanation due to a shameful uncertainty.
Worry not, dear readers, in today’s post we debunk some of the misconceptions and misunderstandings around website terminology and clarify any confusion…for your convenience.
Like most things, website design has a process. The first thing one would do is find a hosting service provider. Hosting can basically be referred to as the property on which you aim to build your business. It’s only the land. It comes with no infrastructures, shelving or stock. It is you property on the Internet, nothing else. In most cases, you pay your service provider a monthly fee for your web hosting…your premises on the Internet.
Once you have your virtual land in the world of Internet, you will need to start construction on your building. This is where web development comes in. The designer will create a website with pages that support your line of business or intention for the site. This means creating a landing page, services page, contact page and so forth. Your stock is the content, your services or products. The information you insert onto the website. Now you have land, infrastructure and stock. But how will people find you? Your website is a domain and has a domain name. A domain is the URL link at the top of your search bar when you are on any given website or location on the Internet. The domain will have your name in it, following http://.
Every domain name is linked to a unique IP address, which is a series of numerals that your computer uses to find your domain. On the surface we use the domain name; in the background the computer uses an IP address. It is much like dialling a number on your phone. You will search for “Jack” in your directory but your phone uses a series of numbers to dial the contact.
Having said that and now having a better understanding of some of the terminology, our services include Hosting options. However, should you host with another company but want us to construct your website we are able to do so. As a website design company we offer web design options with external hosting, which means your hosting is provided by another company, but we can still construct the infrastructure on your virtual land. However, we prefer to provide the hosting with our domains. The reason being that if problems occur we can much better and much sooner resolve any issues, should they arise, when clients host with us.
Should you be in the market for a website and would like to host with us as well, please visit our website to explore the different options available or contact us for further information.
